Sustainable Development

The time has come to break with past patterns. There is an opportunity to avoid the mistakes of past development and to chose more sustainable development paths.

Through the UN's Kyoto Protocol, developing country projects and programmes that verifiably demonstrate emission reductions that are additional to what would otherwise have happened can receive financial incentives. These projects can generate ‘carbon credits’ that promote cleaner development paths. Should such projects generate strong sustainable development benefits they are likely to simultaneously strengthen adaptive capacity.Biodiversity on a family farm

With increasing finance being made available for adaptation to climate change there is also an opportunity for projects and programmes in developing countries to verifiably demonstrate cost effective climate change vulnerability reduction measures.
